Peter Orcutt’s Story
A Journey of Redemption
In the heart of Kelowna, Peter Orcutt’s story unfolds as a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering support of a caring community. Raised by a single mother alongside his sister, Peter faced early challenges that led him down a tumultuous path.
At the tender age of 12, Peter began experimenting with drugs and alcohol, a journey that intertwined with encounters with the law and periodic stays in juvenile facilities. By age 19, he decided that a life behind bars was not the one he wanted. At 21, he made a pivotal choice to step away from a criminal lifestyle.
The following years saw Peter grappling with homelessness, culminating in a near-fatal overdose in 2018 due to tainted drugs laced with fentanyl. Faced with the harsh reality of mortality, Peter found the strength to embark on a transformative journey.
In a pivotal moment of change, Peter committed to a year-long treatment program at the Inner Visions Society in Maple Ridge. While the program equipped him with valuable skills and training, he found himself at a crossroads upon completion.
In 2021, Peter’s life took a positive turn when he connected with Rick, the Program Manager of the Next Step Program at The Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope. Moving into the supportive living residence marked a new chapter, and his dedication shone through as he immersed himself in the meal centre kitchen, volunteering 2 days a week. His commitment grew, leading to 3 to 4 days of service and eventually, a job offer.
During his time at the Centre, Peter engaged with transformative programs like the Pathway of Hope, 12 Step, and Next Step Anger Management. Now a full-time Shelter Worker, Peter plays a vital role in intake and assisting guests in the shelters. His journey is one of redemption, with every step fueled by the support of his circle – his mom, sister, nieces, nephews, friends, and the Salvation Army family.
Peter’s ability to empathize, rooted in his lived experiences, has become a beacon of hope for others on similar paths. He stands as a reminder that everyone is worthy of a second chance. With secured housing and a fulfilling role at The Salvation Army, Peter Orcutt continues to inspire those around him, weaving a narrative of triumph over adversity and the transformative power of community support.
